The Russell Hotel
When Thomas Brennan built the Port Jackson Hotel in George Street at the Rocks in 1887 it had only 12 rooms. He understood that hospitality was not about size, but about welcoming people.Over the last century The Rocks has seen many changes, amongst them the renovation of the hotel in 1982, and renaming to The Russell, after the hotels last publican.
One thing that hasn't changed over the years is our idea of hospitality. It is not about size or prestige - it's about welcome.
The Russell stands on what was part of the original village of Sydney. It is a small, intimate hotel that has maintained the charm and elegance of a bygone era.
In keeping with the character of the building, each room has been decorated individually and filled with period or antique furniture. Rooms and public areas are all adorned with fresh flowers, and even our room keys have been individually designed and hand painted.
Overlooking busy Circular Quay is our rooftop garden, a sunny retreat where guests
may have breakfast or take time out and watch the world go by.
On the first floor you will find our comfortable sitting room and fully equipped bar, with french doors opening out to a balcony over George Street with wonderful views of Circular Quay. Enjoy local wines or simply relax and catch up on your reading or correspondence.
At Boulders restaurant you'll find a room that is light and airy. A staircase that dates back over a century. And food that combines the best Australian produce, with cuisines from around the world.
One hundred years on, The Russell is still ideally located for business and pleasure, with city shopping, some of Australia's finest Restaurants and colonial pubs just moments away.
For art lovers the Museum of Contemporary Art is just across the road and the Opera House and Harbour Bridge an exhilerating ten minute walk from your room.
Buses, trains and ferries are all directly opposite the hotel and the Airport Express bus service stops right outside the front door.
